Matthew 4:17 “And so, beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things concerning himself—Jesus said to them, ‘Repent; for the Kingdom of Heaven is near.”
We are blessed today with the gift of technology, including GPS directions. Even if you are off course by just one degree, your GPS will alert you and give you the best route back to your destination. This is similar to what Jesus did in Matthew with his preaching. He directed people to the correct path.
John the Baptist had previously called the people to repent in Matt. 3:2. Now the Son of God was calling his followers to repent as well. Jesus’ call to repentance demonstrates that repentance is not only something the prophet calls for but also a command given directly by the King.
Repenting means much more than being sorry for something. It is a complete turnaround in your way of thinking and living. It means completely changing your direction, turning everything in your life around, and facing God. And repentance isn’t only about the fact that you have guilt, but it is because of the opportunity that exists for you to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. The king has arrived, and the light has appeared!
Wiersbe states that repentance requires changes in three areas of our lives. We need to change how we think (mind), how we feel (heart), and the direction of our lives (will). Once the entire person turns to God and repents, the entire person can be used to advance the kingdom of God.
This is a call of mercy to all. Jesus did not heal the sick, drive out demons, nor choose his disciples until he commanded everyone to repent. Therefore, for those who lead, protect, and serve, this reminds us that mission success comes from a surrendered heart. The warriors’ first victory is over themselves. The kingdom advances through the lives of those who surrender to the authority of their King and not through the power of their will.
