Hebrews 9:22, 27-28 “Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.” 27–28 “And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.2” (ESV)
Under the Old Testament covenant, to cover the penalty of sin, a frequent blood sacrifice was required. A vivid example of its consequence. Death. Set for every man, this appointment cannot be avoided, nor can the subsequent appearance before the righteous judge. What payment will you bring for your wrongful deeds on that day? Good works, a friendly smile, sincere intentions?
In 1876, Robert Lowry penned the words to Nothing But The Blood of Jesus.
What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
O precious is the flow
that makes me white as snow;
no other fount I know;
nothing but the blood of Jesus.
For my pardon this I see:
nothing but the blood of Jesus.
For my cleansing this my plea:
nothing but the blood of Jesus.
Nothing can for sin atone:
nothing but the blood of Jesus.
Naught of good that I have done:
nothing but the blood of Jesus.
This is all my hope and peace:
nothing but the blood of Jesus.
This is all my righteousness:
nothing but the blood of Jesus.
A penalty so steep we could not pay. A guilt we can not handle. But for the blood of Jesus, condemned forever are we.
