Positioned Properly

1 Peter 5:5-6 “…Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for ‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.’ Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you.2”(ESV)

One of the most challenging qualities to gain, and one of the hardest to keep, is humility. These verses are tough to write about because only Scripture and Jesus show humility perfectly in action. Yet Peter, an eyewitness to Christ, doesn’t hesitate. He says it plainly: Humble yourselves.

That’s not the leadership culture we see today. We’re told to build a platform, speak louder, collect applause, and make sure we’re noticed. For leaders, in the pulpit or the marketplace, it’s easy to gain momentum and slowly lose the ground of humility. The world doesn’t reward the way God does.

But that’s the key.

Psalm 138:6 says, “Though the LORD be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off.1” Friends have reminded me: when humility leads, following comes more easily. But when “I” gets out front, the view isn’t attractive.

So let’s take Jesus at His word in Matthew 23:12: “Whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.1”(KJV)
