1 John 5:18-20 “We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one cannot harm them. We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one. We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.5” (NIV)
Writing to believers who had witnessed both persecution and miracles, John closes with three certainties wrapped in a charge.
We know we are protected. A transformed life does not continue in habitual, unrepentant sin. We can have victory. The believer is secure not because of our grip on Christ, but because of Christ’s grip on us.
We know we are positioned. There are only two camps. We belong to God. The world lies under the sway of the evil one. Knowing which side you are on determines everything about how you fight and the life you lead.
We know we are poised. Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, the satisfaction for our sin. We are not guessing. We are grounded in truth. Poised to walk in newness of life.
