Royal Citizenship Granted

Ephesians 2:19-22 “So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.2(ESV)

What does it mean to be a member of a community? In our lives as students, soldiers, professionals, or whatever else we may be, we gather all sorts of “evidence” of our membership – badges, coins, rings, and degrees that clearly state, “I am a part of this.” However, every membership we have on earth will eventually come to an end. A team will cut a player. An organization will cease to exist. Our allegiance will change.

Paul says there exists a membership that cannot be compared to any on earth. “Strangers and foreigners”, he writes, “no longer but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God.” (Ephesians 2:19) The most exclusive and highly sought-after citizenships on earth often demand long waiting lists, residency requirements, proficiency in languages, and substantial investments before they can be obtained. By contrast, citizenship within the Kingdom of God was offered to people who had previously been enemies, strangers, and without rights, simply based upon their faith in Christ. No investment was demanded. No sacrifice of their own could obtain it. Only the shed blood of Christ and a call to believe.

In Philippians 3:20, Paul also states, “For our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.2(ESV)

There exists a citizenship that no earthly passport can rival.

However, Paul takes his thought further than mere citizenship. He indicates that not only are you admitted to the Kingdom, but you are incorporated into the household of God. You are being formed into a dwelling with God, along with every other believer. The Master Architect is building something that will last forever, and you are a part of it.

Therefore, as you battle through the currents of this age, don’t forget that your home is not located on Earth. Your home is being built for you by the One who shed His blood to secure your admission. How does your view of the obstacle in front of you change when you realize your ultimate destination is secure?
Where do you need to stop trying and surrender to the Builder?
