1 John 1:8-10 – “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.2“(ESV)
The easiest person to lie to is ourselves.
Jeremiah 17:9 cuts deep: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” We rehearse our excuses until we believe them. We rationalize, minimize, and reframe. Sin unchecked becomes normalized. What we hide in darkness grows in darkness.
In 2015, Elizabeth Holmes built a $9 billion company on blood-testing technology that didn’t work. She convinced high-power institutions. Fooled the Walton family. Deceived Rupert Murdoch. But the most dangerous deception was the one she sold herself. When the Wall Street Journal exposed the fraud, she doubled down, faking tests, machines, and results. Reality didn’t budge. By 2023: 11 years in federal prison.
You’d never go that far. No one thinks they will. That’s why we need daily course corrections from the only navigation tool that stays true. James 1:22 warns: “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.2“(ESV)
Confession isn’t informing God—He already knows. Confession is agreeing with Him. It’s the warrior’s discipline of calling things what they are, no matter how uncomfortable. It’s bringing sin into the light before the collision with truth becomes catastrophic.
The best tell of truth is the direction to which it points.
What lies are you believing?
Where are they leading?
