Building Sandcastles?

1 John 2:15-17 “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.2“(ESV)

You’ve likely built a sandcastle at the beach, only to watch it fall, get trampled, or wash away with the tide. Now imagine you’d bought furniture for that castle, meticulously painted the exterior, and hired a landscape architect to perfect the setting.

How do you feel when that wave crashes over your work? Devastated. Frustrated. Angry. You’d sit back and say, “It wasn’t worth it. I’ve lost it all.” Or perhaps the wave never comes, and you’re even worse, “Look at all I’ve built.”

Too many people spend their entire lives building sandcastles. Then, as hardship, destruction, or age arrives, they realize their focus and efforts were pointed at the short dash of life, forgetting that we are eternal beings.

When our love becomes attached here, we neglect our God-given purpose and forget our final destination.

You’d never invest endless time and money in a sandcastle.

Why do we treat this life any differently?

Jesus tells us in Matthew 6:19-21 not to lay up treasures on earth, but to lay up treasures in heaven. “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.2“(ESV)

Are you building a sandcastle or laying up treasure in heaven?
