2 Peter 2:22 What the true proverb says has happened to them: “The dog returns to its own vomit, and the sow, after washing herself, returns to wallow in the mire.”
Peter wraps up this chapter, further condemning false prophets while issuing a warning for all of us. It may be easy to look at the ravenous nature of the committed, sinful man and say, “I’m not that bad.” Yet willful participation in sin, even in thought, reveals our true nature.
This warning extends beyond obvious false teachers to anyone who claims Christ without transformation. The test for us all is: have our desires changed? A pig wants slop, and a dog will return to its vomit, but sheep desire green pastures.
Wiersbe warns that “It is a startling fact that there are many people in our churches who have never truly been born again, but who are convinced that they are saved and going to heaven! They have had ‘an experience,’ and perhaps look better (like the sow) and feel better (like the dog), but they have not been made better as ‘partakers of the divine nature.’”
Our desires reveal if a change has been made.
Our desires reveal the character within.
2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
True sanctification, becoming more like Christ, always begins with a changed nature, not external reform.
